Canvas Student FAQs

Canvas Basics

  • What is Canvas?
    • Canvas is a learning management system, or LMS. An LMS is a tool that manages much of the administration of a class, like the setting of due dates, sharing of readings and videos, submission of assignments, and delivery of grades, so that teachers and students can more easily focus on the teaching and learning components of the class experience. SSU has partnered with Canvas to provide this service for our faculty and students.
  • How do I log in to Canvas?
    • Log in to the SSU Online Services Portal and click on the tile labeled "Canvas."
  • How do I find my courses on Canvas?
    • When you click on the Canvas tile in the SSU Online Services Portal, you'll be taken to your Canvas Dashboard page. You should see a tile there for each of your current SSU courses. Clicking on a tile will take you to the Canvas page for that course.
  • I can't log in to Canvas. What do I do?
    • If you have issues logging in to the SSU Online Services Portal, or if the Canvas tile in that portal doesn't work for you, please contact SSU's IT Helpdesk. They can help you resolve your issue.
  • Something is wrong on my Canvas course page. What do I do?
    • Each Canvas course page is designed and managed by the faculty member teaching that class. If you have any issues using Canvas or finding your content in a Canvas course page, contact your instructor directly.
  • My course isn't listed in my Canvas dashboard. What do I do?
    • It depends on how long it has been since you registered for your class. Canvas updates its enrollment every morning at 4AM, so you normally won't get access to your Canvas course until the morning after you register for a class. If over 24 hours have passed since you registered, however, you should contact SSU's IT Helpdesk and explain your issue to them.
  • I have a disability and I can't access my course materials on Canvas. What do I do?
    • If you are an SSU student with a disability, you can contact SSU's Disability Services for Students (DSS) to discuss your needs. Their team can communicate with your instructor to ensure that you get the accommodations and support that you need to access your course materials and succeed in your course. If you don't want to partner with DSS for any reason, you can also suggest to your instructor that they look into CTET's Accessible Content Partnership. CTET is able to remediate most course materials on an instructor's behalf, at no cost to the instructor, to make them accessible for students.
  • How do I use Canvas on my phone?
    • Canvas has a mobile app for students, available on both the Apple App store and the Google Play store. The mobile app makes it easy to interact with many of Canvas' functions and services on your mobile device.
  • How do I learn more about using Canvas?
    • Canvas maintains a thorough Student Guide that answers most questions, with screenshots.
